Yesterdae

After my waste of caffeine intake at Dean & Deluca (oh, and did I mention that the double macchiato came in a paper cup?) and being let down by the macchiato at &Made by Bruno Ménard, was recommended to try the coffee at Yesterdae. Tucked away in a quiet HDB estate near the PIE where traffic jams are the norm during peak hours, the café is simply furnished with bright colours (blue and green walls and chairs) against the mostly neutral palette. Together, different tables and chairs gave the place a laid-back charm with shelves of books and magazines to while away lazy afternoons. There were coasters, potted plant and tissue box on every table with outdoor seating separated by an all-glass frontage. Interesting details include the water dispenser in the form of a mini beer-barrel, a retro-looking clock and telephone reminiscent of yesterday (pun intended).

I settled for a freshly-made Belgian waffle with handmade Perk me up (coffee) gelato after sampling that, Watermelon Sorbet (too sweet for my liking and a tad creamy to be a sorbet) and Nutella flavours. As the batter was poured into the machine, the café was filled with its aroma. The waffle, served piping-hot, was crispy on the outside while soft and fluffy on the inside. And the cold gelato atop was smooth and not too sweet, with the aroma of and a tinge of bitterness from the roasted beans. Add to these, a drizzle of chocolate sauce and the combination was perfect. The place also sells brownie and rainbow cake (see Yesterdae Revisitedwith cream cheese frosting among other desserts.

Also ordered a coffee (this was after all what I came here to try) since macchiato was not on the menu. Brewed using Switzerland's Chricco D'oro beans with a simple automatic Jura machine, the cuppa had a very strong aroma of the roasted beans. While the coffee lacked body, it was surprisingly good enough to drink sans sugar and creamer. Smooth with a muted acidity and a tinge of bitterness that left a pleasant taste on the tongue. For non-coffee drinkers, there are always tea, hot chocolate and rootbeer float from the menu or the canned and bottled drinks in the display fridge.
