Owl coffee is a familiar brand I grew up with and it was with anticipation befitting of its more than 50 years of coffee roasting and blending experience that I made a trip to Super Group's first foray into a physical store. Coming via the sheltered walkway from Buona Vista MRT Station and up the escalator that leads to The Star Vista, the café is on the left with outdoor seating to its right. Against industrial concrete floor, metal chairs and minimalist naked bulbs hanging from the ceiling were lots of wood and nice lamp shades. An extension of the blue in its logo could be seen in patterns on the wall. Interestingly, packets of different coffee (instead of magazines) were displayed at racks around a pillar column. Items on the menu include Straits Asian-inspired drinks and food, ranging from snacks and toast to main course and desserts.
Ordered a charcoal-roasted coffee – there was a charred aroma of roasted beans in the bitter coffee, which I would prefer to be stronger. Served with coffee caviar that was recommended to be eaten between sips of coffee, and I must say they went well together. Looking like caviar (and hence its name) with texture similar to that of salmon roe or pearls in bubble tea, its initial sweetness gave way to bitterness. Probably made with unsweetened coffee and kept in sugar syrup. Could see pieces of fish and smell aroma of coconut in the otak, with just the right amount of spiciness and a tinge of sourness. And the toast was soft and fluffy with a nice crisp crust. Overall a pleasant experience and by the way, kopi luwak is also available here. Not sure if the good food and friendly service would be enough to keep the crowd streaming, especially since there are many eateries at the newly-opened mall.
Update: The branch at The Star Vista has closed. It can still be found at Bedok Point, Changi Airport, Republic Plaza and National Gallery Singapore.
