I was first brought to Thien Kee Steamboat Restaurant by dining companions who raved about its chicken steamboat. Thought the steamboat uses chicken stock until I reached the Hainanese eatery at the basement of Golden Mile Tower, beside Golden Mile Complex and opposite Golden Mile Food Centre. Went down the steps from the main road and saw that the sparsely furnished place has a "stall" with poached chicken, roast pork and char siew. There is no menu here and only small, medium and large sets are offered for its steamboat – choose from pork, beef and seafood or any combination of these. Ordered a mix (also comes with egg and vegetables) and was not impressed with the steamboat.
However, could not say the same of its chicken rice. Every grain of rice was whole, fragrant and evenly yet lightly greased. Chicken was juicy and tender, including the usually bland and siap chicken breast. Both the rice and chicken were good enough to be eaten just like that, but it would be a pity to miss the chilli and ginger sauce. The sedap chilli sauce was more spicy than garlicky and sour. No complaints about the ginger sauce too. These sit in their respective glass containers with metal lids and spoons on all tables, so you need not keep asking for more. With all components perfectly executed, this has become my favourite Hainanese chicken rice – a perfect balance of taste and texture.
